MANITOBA SAILING AWARDS
The Manitoba Sailing Association Awards and Volunteer Appreciation Night was held on November 9, 2007 at the Fort Whyte Centre. It was a lovely affair with tributes being paid to many sailors, their coaches, volunteers from yacht clubs and MSA board members for their contribution to the sport of sailing. Once again, Zig Zag Yacht Club members received their share of awards. Congratulations to these winners: Justin Alkier, Vanessa Stewart, Chris Ferguson.
Most Improved Sailor -Vanessa Stewart Most Improved Sailor Trophy-presented by Penny McMorris, MSA Parent Representative
Presented by the Manitoba Sailing Association to the Most Improved Sailor who improved his/her racing skills the most over the last years not necessarily showing stellar results but commitment and dedication for racing.
This year's winner has impressed all of us with her enthusiasm for sailing. She has only been racing with the Manitoba Sailing Team since the summer of 2005. Not only Vanessa, but also her dad has got bitten by the bug and since then have travelled to many major events in Canada.
Our recipient is a great role model for our up and coming female sailors and everyone enjoys being around her. She, and her skipper Jocelyn, had a great season in the 29er. Her top placement in 2007 was 7 th , with crew Ian Fast from RLWYC, in a race at the Canadian Youth Championships in Hamilton. She has a natural talent for sailing and with the ability to put differences on board aside when needed, her future in double-handed sailing looks bright.
She is without a doubt deserving of this award as she is always eager to learn more and shows that she is really determined to do well, wherever she is.
Congratulations to this year's award recipient Vanessa Stewart form Zig Zag Yacht Club
10 and under Provincial Optimist Champion - Justin Alkier Justin and his father, Mike, flew all the way from Toronto to enjoy this special evening and to receive this award. Justin won this provincial award at the ZZYC Open where he sailed a pram, beating out sailors his own age who were sailing Optis which is normally considered a faster boat than a pram. We hope you enjoy racing for many years to come.
Provincial 29er Champions - Chris Ferguson (ZZYC) and Chris Bradley ( Victoria YC)

And finally, the reason two of the three lucky winners of the silent auction items were ZZYC members ... the person drawing the lucky tickets... none other than ZZYC Justin Alkier! |
