ZAG YACHT CLUB
Club
History
Zig Zag Yacht Club is a not-for-profit community
recreational organization that was incorporated in 1968.
We have been operating on about 13 acres of property located
on Fisherman's Island in Clearwater Bay on Lake
of the Woods for 40
years.
The club was established by a small group
of families 48 years ago and has continued to grow and improve
ever since. The name “Yacht Club” is misleading and may
even sound unintentionally “elitist”. Though our main
focus was and still is our Sailing Program, we have become so
much more. Zig Zag Yacht Club's activities parallel the
activities of any organized COMMUNITY CENTRE. Our objectives
are to offer activities and programs geared to enhance and improve
community living and to keep the younger members of our community
active and involved over the summer months.
We have always been a volunteer driven organization
and the dedication to our club by the member families over the
years has truly been astounding. Today we are run by
a 12 member Volunteer Board of Directors as well as numerous
additional volunteers who coordinate programs and social events.
The “alumni” of our youth programs in many
cases become instructors in following years and this is a major
reason for the Club's success and longevity.
The Club's programs and activities are geared
to commence with children 4 years of age in our very successful
Summer Fun Camp, and our Sailing Program accepts children from
age 7 years and up. We have also introducing some adult
sailing programs as of 2004 and 2005 saw Adult Fitness
classes as well. In addition to these, we run a Red Cross
Aquaquest Swimming program and an Instructional and Recreational
Tennis program.
Zig Zag Yacht Club hosts a variety of Social
Events. The Commodore's Reception launches the summer season. Later in
July, ZZYC holds the popular Dinner/Dance. This event
always sells out, so order your tickets early. View the “Calendar”
web page for the exact date. ZZYC
is scheduling two "MASTER"S CLASS" Sunday Races where members
(hopefully many adults) are welcome to come for a sail, with
an instructor nearby to help with the rigging, sailing if needed,
and de-rigging. Late in August, Zig Zag has its ZZYC Closed
Club Championship and then fires up the coals for the Family Barbeque
and Kayak Races which welcome member families and their guests. Read
more about these events on the web “Social Events” page. In
addition, ZZYC hosts the ZZYC Open Sailing Regatta, Wednesday
races, a tennis tournament and Wednesday evening
barbeques throughout the summer as well as many other social events. |
